Today, Navy Capt. Michael "Scott" Speicher was laid to rest in Jacksonville, Florida. Over 18 years ago, he was shot down over Iraq during the first Gulf War. Only last month, his remains were finally identified, and he was brought home.
He was a husband, father of two, and taught Sunday school in his local church. He is one of my heroes. People throw that word around loosely these days. Kids (and some adults) tend to look up to athletes, musicians and movie stars as their "heroes." Those types of people wouldn't last 5 minutes in a war zone or firefight. Hell, they wouldn't last 10 minutes in basic training for any of our armed forces. My heroes tend to be those people who, without trying to do anything more extraordinary than their jobs, end up doing something that helps others or touches lives, not just for a few moments but for a lifetime. Men and women doing their duty and sometimes giving the ultimate sacrifice for their country-not because they wanted glory but because their country called and they answered willingly.
It's people like Marcus Luttrell, former Navy SEAL and lone survivor of an ambush of his unit in Afghanistan...his remarkable story of his will to survive is told in "Lone Survivor." Amazing.
Men like Navy SEAL Michael Monsoor...Marine Cpl. Jason Dunham, Sgt. 1st Class Paul Smith, Army Spc. Ross McGinnis...our most recent Medal of Honor recipients. If you don't know what they did to deserve the medal, I urge you to research it...you will be in awe.
And it's men like Scott Speicher, my Marine friends Major B, Dave and Troy...Army Maj. P in Iraq...and countless others who I'll never know the names of...where DO we find such men? Only America could give birth to such as these. I am humbled by their sacrifice, their example. These people are MY heroes.
May our brother, Michael "Scott" Speicher rest in peace and may his name always be remembered with respect and the gratefulness of a nation.
